Hernia Mesh Patients Continue to Suffer

If you search for hernia mesh on Google, you will find many stories of many victims who outline how pain and complications followed surgery. Kathleen Levinson suffered pain after a hernia repair caused bowel obstructions. Several woman, according to an article by CTV News, were in so much pain following their hernia surgery they contemplated the unthinkable.

Whereas these may be just stories some read on media sites, for women like Levinson pain is an everyday occurance. "I have to come to terms with the fact that one of these obstructions could kill me. Your whole life is dominated by your bowels," Levinson said in an interview with ABC.

Mesh Payouts May Not Be Enough

Over $100,000,000 in settlements and verdicts have been recovered in the last five years. Last year alone Kylie Bernadette Tinnock was awarded over $1 million by a jury after a hernia operation went wrong. Levinson, who was offered a $40,000 refused.

The Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) said nearly 100,000 Australians were placed in hospitals yearly for hernia complications, and recovery is not so speedy for everyone. With more and more patients speaking out about their complications, doctors are concerned. Some want a mesh audit.

"There is currently no postoperative surveillance system in place in Australia for patients or clinicians to monitor the outcomes of surgery involving mesh, and this is a major concern for several of our craft groups and consumer health groups," the college said.

Surgeons Defend Mesh

Documentation has continued to pour out about the dangers of certain mesh. Some surgeons are defending hernia mesh. As lawsuits build, it becomes harder to see the positive.

"There are certainly complications associated with hernia mesh, however the problem with abdominal hernias if you don't use mesh, the hernia comes back 70 to 80 percent of the time," Kellee Slater, Board in General Surgery’s national chairwoman, said.

The worst complications come from recalled mesh implants like Physiomesh. Ethicon, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson, responsible for manufacturing Physiomesh hernia implants sold around 33,000 of them worldwide before the product was recalled.
