What is Hernia Mesh? And how is it applied?

There are many types of hernia repair products available, but surgeons typically use a sterile, woven fabric-like device made from a synthetic plastic-like material, such as polypropylene in hernia mesh procedures. It can be in the form of a patch that goes under or over the hernia area, or it can be in the form of a plug that goes inside the hole or gap.

Abdominal hernia mesh is generally available in various measurements and can often be cut to size. Depending on the repair technique used, it’s placed either under or over the hernia gap in the abdominal wall and held in place by a few sutures. Mesh acts as “scaffolding” for new growth of a patient’s own tissue, which is what would eventually happen in successful surgeries.

Hernia mesh is sturdy and strong, yet extremely thin, soft and flexible, which allows it to conform to the body’s movement, position, and size. It is used in both tension-free and laparoscopic tension-free hernia repairs.

Although all mesh products do not have adverse affects, many patients have experienced hernia mesh complications due to defective, subpar products, many of which have already been recalled. To learn more about these complications read here.

The History of Mesh is Wrapped in Greed

Hernias occur when human tissue or internal organs press against or push through a weakness or gap in the abdominal or groin muscles. Thirty years ago, hernias were repaired the old fashioned way, by a highly-specialized surgeon who grafted human tissue onto the hernia area. But that kind of surgery needs a specialist and can take several hours longer, have a longer recovery period, and be more costly than mesh.

When hernia mesh was introduced in 1992, doctors, hospitals and medical facilities looked at the implant option as a cash cow that could increase their annual revenues. They could perform more hernia repairs in less time and didn’t need specialized surgeons, so they could suddenly make a lot more money.

Not all mesh is bad, but many brands use a material that the body cannot easily absorb and that sometimes the body rejects. It can also fuse with or adhere to tissue or other organs or perforate tissue or other organs or become infected.
